Why does AI make things up and give wrong answers with confidence?
AI assistants make things up because they generate plausible text, not verified facts. The model predicts what words should come next based on patterns it learned, so when it lacks the real answer it can still produce something that sounds right. This is often called a hallucination.
It is most likely with obscure topics, exact quotes, citations, numbers and recent events. To reduce it:
- Paste the source material and say "answer only from this text".
- Add "if you are not sure, say so".
- Use a search feature if your assistant has one, and open the links.
- Ask for a list of the factual claims, then check the important ones yourself.
No setting removes the problem completely, so verify anything you will publish, send or act on.
